Matching the color of the self-tanner with your skin tone is important, otherwise it would look ultra fake and hideous. Try to match the tanner closest to your skin tone. If you are fair-skinned, opt for a lighter shade of the tanner. Try a medium shade of the tanner, if you are olive-skinned. And if you have a bronze to a brown shade, go for the darker color of the tanner. This will make your skin look naturally tanned.

2. Prevent breakouts with ice cubes

Ice cubes are great to treat breakouts by using it before self-tanning. Rubbing them over your face will seal your pores. Pat dry your face with a towel or a tissue paper, and then apply the self tanner. This way, your pores don’t get blocked by the self-tanner, leading to breakouts in future.

3. Exfoliate on rotation

Exfoliation is the best thing you can do before self-tanning. This will make the application of the tanner smooth and prevent blotches. Use an oil-free exfoliator as it creates a barrier between your skin and the tanner, and creates an uneven skin surface to apply the tanner. Exfoliating after self-tanning is also important as it will make the tan fade, evenly. It is advisable to wait for three days after self-tanning and exfoliate to help to keep a perfect natural-looking hue.

4. Go in order

Maintain an order when applying a self-tanner. It will help to spread the tanner evenly over your body. Work the excess tan from your arms down to your hands and from your legs to your feet and ankles. Also, always apply the tanner in layers to find the right shade that suits you. This also helps to make sure you don’t leave behind any spot.

5. Make your own self tanner back applicator

diy tanner back applicator

Look for a self-tanning spray with a 360-degree nozzle applicator, so that you can turn it upside down. Here’s a DIY method to make a self-tanner back applicator. Take a wooden spoon or a body brush and attach a self-tanner mitt to it. Secure the mitt with a rubber band or hair elastic at the handle of the brush or spoon. Now simply, apply the tanner to your mitt and swipe it across your back easily.

6. For better application

Your face, hands, elbow, knees and feet require less coloration than other body parts. Hence for a better and even application of the self tanner, it is advisable to apply it at the centre of your mitt, so that it distributes accordingly towards the tips. Elbows don’t require special application because they are naturally pretty colored. Hence simply spread the excess tanner from your arm down towards your elbow.

7. Hide the hairline with a toner

The hair-line can be a difficult area to save from getting uneven tanning lines. This area often comes out to have a dark streak of self-tanner that is unsightly after the application. To even out the coloring along your hairline, use a light toner after applying the self tanner. This will make it look more evened out and create a natural looking line between your skin and hair.
