Home remedies for oily skin

When the sebaceous glands, located under the surface of the skin, produce a lot of sebum, which is an oily substance made up of fats, the skin becomes oily. Sebum produced in the right quantity is essential for the skin as it helps to moisturize it and keeps it healthy and shiny, but excess oil can lead to acne. Clogged pores and other skin issues start enhancing the production of sebum on a daily basis.

Home remedies can be helpful to solve a lot of problems for people with oily skin:

  • Wash your face : People with oily skin should wash their face at least thrice a day, but they should not overdo it as harsh soaps can do more harm than you think. One should try using a mild soap or gram flour while washing their face as it can help open up the pores more often.
  • Blotting paper : Blotting excess oil from the skin is a way to minimize sebum production. These papers are not expensive and can be procured from any hardware store. Place the blotting paper on oily skin and it will soak the excess oil.
  • Honey : Honey has antibacterial and antiseptic properties that are beneficial for the skin. Honey is known to be a natural humectant and keeps the skin moist by drawing excess moisture from the skin.
It is known to treat oily skin, so apply a face pack of raw unprocessed honey on to the face and neck for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. You can also half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to the honey for enhanced skin texture, giving you a combination of positive effects for the skin.
  • Cosmetic clay : Healing clay or cosmetic clay helps absorb the excess oil from the skin and helps in removing acne, brown spots, and such. Clay is highly absorbent, which means it can help treat the skin in balancing the production of sebum.
Add a teaspoon of clay to one tablespoon of filtered water or rose water, and make a paste. Apply this face mask on the face and leave it to dry. Remove the mask and use warm water to rinse the face and pat dry. Clay masks are much softer as compared to peel-off masks.
  • Egg whites : Egg whites help in removing blemishes off the skin, work on acne, smoothen the face, absorb oil, and they are antibacterial and are also a good choice of getting a facial for the skin. Lemon and egg whites is a wonderful combination as the citrus in lemon helps to open clogged pores. The antibacterial properties of lemon and egg whites can help bring a glow to the skin.
Remove egg whites into a bowl and add the juice of half a lemon. Stir the mixture until it gives out thick, white foam. Apply it on the face with a brush, place strips of tissue paper or napkins on top, and apply the mixture again. Let this stay for 20 minutes and rinse off with cold water.
