Know The Causes Insomnia

Insomnia is a condition where the person is unable to sleep and even if he or sheep falls asleep it is hard for them to stay asleep. People with insomnia tend to wake up very early and find it hard to go back to sleep. People still feel tired when they wake up and have a low energy level throughout the day. Lack of sleep not only brings down the energy but also the health and productivity.

The minimum sleeping hours may vary from person to person, but on an average, a human being needs seven to eight hours of sleep. Some face short-term insomnia which lasts for days and some face chronic insomnia which stays for a month or more. Let us take a look at some of the reasons.

  • Stress: Thinking too much about work, academics, career, family, finance or anything can keep the mind active at night and makes it difficult to sleep. Death of a loved one, illness or any event that emotionally interferes with an individual can cause insomnia.
  • Work Schedule: Any event that interferes with the body cycle that is the circadian cycle can create insomnia. Extra working hours, work-related travels, shift in time zones, changing shifts, jet lag all interfere with the sleep-wake cycle eventually leading to insomnia.
  • Poor sleeping schedule: Sleeping habits which don’t have a routine, naps, unfavorable sleeping environment, smartphones, eating on the bed, stimulating acts before sleeping, watching TV on the bed all can disrupt the sleep cycle.
  • Haphazard Eating: It is always better to sleep without a fully loaded stomach. A full tummy can be physically uncomfortable for sleeping. Poor eating habits which lead to acidity, heartburn can make sleeping uncomfortable.
  • Medication: Many drugs interfere with sleep. Antidepressants and medication for blood pressure and asthma can disrupt sleep. Some painkillers also keep patients from sleeping.
  • Caffeine and nicotine: Consumption of caffeine and nicotine afternoon can stimulate the brain and can keep a person from falling asleep at night.

Sleeplessness is a disorder which can be effectively dealt with by changing some daily habits. If insomnia is damaging your health and productivity at work, it is best to consult a doctor and identify the reason behind the problem. The doctor may refer to a sleep center for special testing.
